.: Style
The layout of Adventure Quest is pretty boring. Once you navigate to the page that you actually play the game, the page is roughly 40% grey. Having a page nearly half grey/black is a bit depressing if you ask me. But overall, the layout shows a nice example of their art via the character on the game page itself.
First off when you create an account you are to make your character. You can choose the gender, hairstyle and color, skin tone, and eye color. You can later edit your character’s appearance for 20 gold. With armor you can also change your character as well. There are many different options you can choose to equip your character with, including elemental armor, such as fire, water, energy, etc.
The graphics of the site are extremely well drawn, with over 700 monsters to battle. There are also a countless number of spells, weapons, armor, and pets, which can all be used with your character during battle. The images for all of these are very good, blowing the art for some sites in the same genre out of the water. There were a few battle scenes that I noticed the graphics were not quite as good as the majority of the site. I am guessing these are just images that have not been updated, but there is no way to be sure.
The only problem I really had with Adventure Quest is that paid users have priority to the servers over non-paid users, which prevented me from logging on quite a few times. In order to be guaranteed a server you must pay $19.99 to become a “guardian.” It is a onetime fee you pay, and it also gives you special benefits other than being allowed on a server, such as special weapons and access to new regions.
.: Plot
The goal of Adventure Quest is to battle monsters, join wars, and increase the level of your character.
With over 700 monsters to battle, there is nearly a limitless amount to do on the site, but since all the battles are nearly identical it grows old pretty fast. The only difference between each battle (other than the monster’s image) is the amount of hit points the monster takes from you, and what element it. Based on the monster’s element you can decide which elemental weapon will affect the monster the most. For example, an ice pet will be most affected by a fire-type sword rather than an earth sword.
I was unable to find out much about the war aspect of the game, since there is currently not a war in progress. All I was able to find out about wars is that the members all work together in order to beat a group of monsters.
To increase the level of your character you must battle, and you must battle frequently. You must get a certain number of points for each level-up, and the difficulty of the monster you are fighting determines the number of points you get. Increasing your level makes more pets, weapons, spells, and armor available for purchase. The higher your level the better the weapons you can purchase, which means you can kill monsters you couldn’t when you first started. You can also train yourself, but in order to do that you have to beat your “teacher”, which proved to be very difficult for me.
.: Safety
On the game itself, you have no contact with any other members of the site. That may be a good thing as far as safety goes, but it greatly limits the community of the site, as I have explained below. The forums are not directly related to the site, so I will not base my rating of the safety itself based on the forums shared by other sites.
Since the genre of the site is with battling and killing monsters, it may not be appropriate for some younger users. Adventure Quest does not ask your age during registration, therefore anyone can access the site.
.: Gameplay
You can’t walk around like in many other RPG sites of the same genre, such as Runescape, so that is a drawback to Adventure Quest that I see. But in some cases that is also a good thing as you don’t have to worry as much about the game freezing, or getting your character “stuck” somewhere.
The battles become extremely repetitive and tend to lose my attention before long. There are multiple quests you can also attempt in the game, but in order to finish the quest you must battle yet another monster. There really isn’t anything you can do on the site that does not involve fighting an opponent in some form or another.
Not only can you train your own character, but you can also purchase and train pets. These pets can help you during battle by also taking hit points away from your opponents. Just like with the weapons and other items, your character’s level also determines what type of pets you can purchase. When you first start out, at level one, you can purchase a pet rabbit from the shop in town. Pets also are elemental, meaning their element can affect each monster differently. Later on once you increase your level you can also purchase cardinals, penguins, and many types of mythological creatures.
.: Community
I wasn’t quite sure how to rate this one exactly. The site does not have a forum dedicated to chat just about Adventure Quest, but rather they share a forum with Dragon Fable and Mech Quest. Although I didn’t spend long on the forums, they didn’t seem to be well organized.
The forums for the three sites were all jumbled together. They did have subcategories for each site, but again, it proved to be fairly hard to find just what you were looking for. At the time I visited the forums there were 385 members and 1475 guests online, proving the forums to be active. Of course I did not go through every single board on the forums, but I did not see many people breaking the forum rules. The ones I did, I reported, and the moderators took care of the user within a few minutes. The moderators certainly seem to be doing their jobs well.
I was pretty disappointed that Adventure Quest did not have any type of multiplayer activities, since with RPG and battle sites that is the main attraction for many people. I think the site itself would bring in a lot of members if there was a way to battle other users.
