.: Style
To put it quite simply, the layout of Alien Adoption Agency is quite boring. Each page is about 25% or more blank space. The layout itself is just made up of a grey bar across the top and a grey bar to the left of your screen. You have all your links at the top and bottom, and a sidebar on the left to show the stats of your alien.
The image of your alien is decent, but certainly needs some updating. Your alien comes in 23 colors ranging from ghost white to camouflage. You can also purchase items for your alien such as facial piercings, hair, clothing and jewelry.
The images for the areas you visit in the game, such as the bank, do not exactly seem appropriate. In the bank image they have two aliens holding up the bank with guns. I mean, come on, it’s a virtual site. I know the site owners can do as they wish, but if they are going to direct their site to a certain age group then the content must be appropriate for that group.
.: Plot
To be perfectly honest, I don’t know what the point of the game is, other than to increase the level of your alien. Throughout the entire game you are just making sure you keep your alien alive by feeding him/her and giving them herbs in order to keep their health up. I guess the whole thing is just revolved around battling your alien and increasing stats, but the site isn’t all that entertaining. In order to keep your alien in good health, you must harvest herbs. But before you can do that you must educate your alien in the field of horticulture. The majority of the site involves activities that will help to battle your alien in the future.
.: Safety
When signing up, you are never asked your age, therefore anyone who signs up can use the chat features. They have message boards, Real-time Chat, and a mail feature, none of which seem to be very safe. People who get banned from the chat features may PURCHASE their way back into being able to use those features. “Subscribers banned from chat or message boards may use a paid multi account to continue accessing these features.” (Quote pulled directly from the rules page.)
Although the message boards do have moderators, they don’t quite seem to be doing their jobs. The forums are not filtered, nor is there a way to report other users. The forums are filled with mature content matter, and many of the staff are involved in these conversations as well. I noticed a board about a user stating he was depressed and one of the moderators left him this comment “suicide is painless – Moderator El Addy.”
With the Real-time Chat box, there are no filters, nor is there a way to report another user. During my visit there were multiple people typing random obscenities in the chat box. There were also users giving out their phone numbers, email addresses, and even a few asking for phone sex. Never have I seen a site directed towards younger users that is so negligent with upholding the rules.
Just like the Real-time chat and message boards, there are no filters or ways to report the mail. During my visit to Alien Adoption Agency I received several obscene mails from other users. I know for a fact AAA is not a site I would care to go back to.
During my whole time here I have yet to see any type of report button, nor have I found a way to contact a staff member. This is by far one of the worst sites out there as far as safety. The only feature on this game that could make things safe for users is the block feature in the mail.
.: Gameplay
You have a tutorial as soon as you sign up as to how to navigate the site. It shows you all the basic things; school, battle, buying items, banking, etc. But there are many things you have to figure out on your own.
There are many different ways in which you can make money on Alien Adoption Agency by: battling, entering the lottery and playing casino games, and playing games such as Executioner's Square (their form of hangman.)
With the battling system you can choose many different users to fight your alien against. Based on the difficulty and level of your opponent you can win game currency, but also have your alien killed or injured in the process. But there is nothing to worry about, you can harvest green herbs in order to bring your alien's health back up, or even revive your alien using blue herbs.
With the lottery, you are to choose five numbers from 0-9 in order to purchase a ticket for 10,000 credits.Based on the amount of numbers you match with the winning ticket, you can win anywhere from 10%-50% of the jackpot. In the casino you can play Blackjack, Slot Machines, and Dice Poker, but of course you must pay credits in order to play.
Although it may seem gruesome, you can also play Alien Adoption Agency's version of Hangman called Executioner's Square. You play just like regular hangman, but instead of a stick figure you are actually hanging your own alien when you guess an incorrect letter. You can win 50-250 credits depending on the difficulty of the game you play.
.: Community
There are multiple different ways to contact other users on the game in the form of a Real-time chat box in the top right corner of every page, a mail system (called QuickPosts), and message boards with 21 different topics to choose from.
They also have guilds in which you can join up with other users, but guilds do not have layouts or a guild chat system, so they are pretty much useless in my opinion. When you join a guild, the points you earn during battle are accumulated with your other guild members. But you must also pay 1% of your credits won during battle to the guild.
The message boards are very sloppy and disorganized; making things very hard to find. Posts are just listed, which makes it hard to keep with a conversation. The forums are very active, however, with 2285 new messages being posted in a day.
As long as you could find a way to avoid the rude, obscene users, then the site might have a nice community. But personally, I don’t feel that it’s worth trying to become part of a community when it is filled with people of that nature.
