Visually, Club Penguin is in most cases quite pleasing. The variety of backgrounds and settings through which you navigate your waddly avatar help combat what would otherwise be nothing but a white glacier. It should be noted that Club Penguin is in fact set in a snowy region, but the white motif may begin to get a bit overwhelming after spending but a short amount of time perusing the outdoor sections of the map. Going indoors to the coffee shop, night club, mine shaft, and sport shop helps to keep the colors fresh and new.

Every player begins by selecting a penguin with a color of their choice and desired screen name. Various costumes and wigs are available for purchase as well to create a more diverse community. Your initial color can even be changed throughout the game for a nominal fee. Some items used in certain games like fishing and surfing can also be bought and used in their respective games.
.: Plot

3.00

Not much can be said for plot on this site. It's not that there isn't much going on, it's just that it seems there is not an identifiable goal or plot to be had in this winterscape. There are however, competitions amongst penguin members covering various criteria, fresh ones seemingly arising every week or so. Story writing, team games, and even team script recital at the "Stage Theater" are a few of the things in which penguin members can partake that have some semblance to a goal or plot, if even for a short time.
.: Safety

5.00

Like a few other sites, Club Penguin is C.O.P.P.A restricted. There are several pages devoted to aiding parents and educating them about the safety of the site. Amongst the precautions are 2 "safety chat" options: Ultimate, and Standard. Ultimate safety chat allows the user to use only phrases or emoticons selected from a pre-defined list of acceptable dialogue. Standard safety chat allows for free type. Both however, disallow the use of the number pad in an attempt to thwart phone number trading and such. As the core age range of the site is geared for between 6-14 years old, it is evident that the site makers put time and effort to developing the safety standards. .: Gameplay

4.00

Again, the site is geared toward a younger audience, so understandably the games are a tab bit on the easy side in terms of concept and layout. There is a variety though. As you can imagine there is an assortment of water games such as inter-tubing, fishing, and surfing. There are also multi-player mini games, which is always nice to see available in the bbmmo world. A downhill race, jet pack game, and even Club Penguin's own spin on the classic Hasbro game Connect 4 are a few of the games that penguin members can play in order to accumulate coins. With coins, items such as wigs, jewelry, and costumes can be bought and applied to boost your penguin's avatar.
.: Community

5.00

90 percent of the site integrates a chat environment with the gameplay. Simply type in a phrase or choose one from the menu, and watch a little dialogue bubble appear next to your penguin to be read by all players in the room.

The staff accepts all sorts of fan mail, categorized by type in the "Club Penguin Times", the e-news paper created for the site. Some acceptable fan mail submittal categories are: riddles, short stories, fan art, site suggestions, and even poetry. A select few will even have their artwork/comments displayed in the Penguin times.

The staff is also good at keeping up with posting upcoming events. The site is big on "virtual parties". These little get togethers seem to be really popular, and it looks like they happen every few weeks or so. Updates on new item catalogues and hidden collectible pins to be found by penguin users are also communicated ahead of time by staff.
