I am happy to see the Kingdom on the list, even if it wasn't very highly reviewed. I've been a long time player, and if anyone's eyes start bleeding from looking at the stick figure art, you can blame me for suggesting it be added to the list.
Art:
Such as it is, the kingdom prides itself on being one hundred percent hand drawn. No vectors, no smoothing, and if you buy an animated picture for your avatar, it has to have the same sort of irregular/'hand-drawn' styling to it, even if produced in a paint program. Of course, since a lot of the game's brainstorming seems to come from when the developers are mildly inebriated, the drawing standards aren't set very high.
Gameplay:
Very simple, with a lot of room for unusual tricks.
Each day at rollover, you get 40 adventures.
Depending on your 'path' (explain that in a bit) you can eat or drink or both, or neither. Booze affects drunkeness, food affects fullness, and a lot of other beneficial items affect your spleen.
The moons (at the top right of the screen) affect stat gains in different ways. Grimace full, muscle day (muscle substats +25%), Roland full, Mysticality day, Both Dark, or day just before full dark, Moxie day.
Substats are gained from food or drink or adventuring. They represent a sort of experience gain for each seperate stat.
Muscle represents health and your ability to smash things up close, Mysticality represents magical potential and magical power, and Moxie represents your skill with ranged weapons and your ability to dodge.
Adventuring is the standard go around looking for monsters and sometimes running into other stuff sort of thing. There are a LOT of things beyond standard beat up monsters, but most of that takes some getting used to. (Including a link to the Game's Wikipedia... Which is full of Spoilers. You are warned. http://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Main_Page )
As for 'Paths', these are optional difficulty increasers you can add on to the game after you finish it. That is, you can be unable to consume food (Boozefarian), unable to consume booze (Teetotaller), or unable to consume either (Oxygenarian).
It's hard to really encapsulate the game because it's constantly being worked on, but cross the grinding of a lot of MMOs with a twisted sense of humor and an off color brand of thinking, and you're probably pretty close.
Community:
Obviously, since you're drinking, eating, killing demons, slaughtering cute little bunnies, and whatever else, you'd be assumed to be old enough to take it in stride. I'm not sure how strict the systems are for keeping that enforced, so I need to go with the review's finding of it not being too thorough. But if you can deal with/block the handful of idiots, you can enjoy a relatively friendly community. Games, radio, forums for discussion, something will surely catch your eye.
The new addition of a 'Clan Dungeon' to the game has also made a lot of clans start casting about for players to join, so that's reinforced a bit of Clan Coordination.
Personally, I like the game's sense of humor, pop culture jokes, and the new content/puzzles that are constantly added/available. Of course, you can also expect to threaten your computer with harm when the Random Number Generator decides to hate you. (RNG hatred is a running joke in the game.) It's not for young kids, but if you need something to spend up to an hour on a day, It'll keep you entertained.
I'd ask for comments, but it's almost impossible to get a feel for the game in the first few days... so give it about a week before poking. Happy playing all! Enjoy the Kingdom.
