When first starting out the layout of Travian is quite boring, and doesn’t seem like a site that would keep someone’s attention for long.. The majority of the screen space is filled by white, and the colors are not exactly eye-catching.

The only graphics in the game are maps of the area and of your village, and the symbols standing for each of your resources. Even with the small amount of graphics they do have, they

On their FAQ page, which took me forever to find, they boast that Travian won a Great Game award in 2006. Personally, I feel that the site itself is disorganized, making things hard to find and also difficult to play the game.

The main idea of the game is to reign over a successful empire while making sure you maintain the resources needed for survival.

When first starting out you are told to choose your tribe, you have the option of Romans, Gauls, and Teuton tribes. You can attack other tribes, but you can be attacked as well. The first twelve days of your membership you are unable to be attacked by other users, but after that you are fair game to anyone. You can construct a building called a “Canny” that protects your resources from raids, but you must still build up your military in order to become successful on the site.

With commitment, I believe a person could certainly become addicted to Travian, but it would take a great deal of time in order to get things started up.
.: Safety

As far as I am aware, Travian has no way to abide by C.O.P.P.A rules and regulations as you are never asked your age during registration, yet as soon as you activate your account you can access both real-time chat and a forum.

With chat, there I no way to report another user, nor are there any staff members moderating the chat box at all times. The chat box is rarely functional as the 5 times I logged in the chat was down 4 of those times.

The forums do have both moderators and administrators to keep the forum clean, and they also have options in which you can report a post.

The game itself is extremely difficult to get used to when you first start out, and I am still not sure if I completely understand what I am supposed to be doing. The tutorial given at the start of the site really only tells you how to create resources and build new components for your village, which really doesn’t even allow you to get the gist of things. There are, however, some great guides created by other members on the forums.

Many features of the game are only accessible after constructing certain buildings, such as training your troops in the academy. But with persistence you can unlock all the features of the game.

There is plenty to do on Travian, and there is nearly an endless amount of other villages you can attack. If you are interested in this type of game this one would probably be a great one to join, as long as graphics are not a high priority to you.

As I said in the Safety section of this review, the chat option was not working 4 of the 5 times I checked it. The forums, however, are extremely active and the majority of the users are quite friendly.

I did however see quite a bit of SPAM on the forums and multiple feuds (that seemed to get a bit out of hand) about the best method of attacking another village. Many of the members seemed to be a bit immature, but since the site does not even ask your age when signing up, that is to be expected.

Overall, everyone seemed to be very welcoming to newer players, and also tried to help out as much as possible. I still believe it would be quite difficult to maintain a site when there is no way for the staff to know how old their users are.
