WHo plays runescape here? How much do you like it?
Personally, I never liked MMORPGs, but Runescape kept me interested for quite awhile. (eventually I got sick of having to walk everywhere, though)
It's been around forever... I wasn't much into it myself.
That makes two of us *whew* I was beginning to think I was the only freak who never loved it/things very similar
I can play it with mild interest, but I've never been much into fantasy anyway. I have days when I do play it... but it's not as interesting as some sites. Some people really enjoy it, and I can kinda see why.
Problem is, Membership limitation is an issue. Its not as much an issue as on some other sites, but it's still felt alot. It also has a problem with boring people to death when getting anywhere... because running is terribly slow and the map is so massively big.
However, its one of the few sites I've seen with masses of help on nearly any subject, which is a plus.
That's true, they do have a lot of help, and a convienient map of the world (though running/walking is STILL a pain). I think about the only thing that annoyed me about membership was a hole in a wall somewhere. Only members could climb through it. Now, while I sorta get that "it's a shortcut" I think it's a bit odd to say "you can't climb through this hole" it would have made more sense if they made something like a guard who stops you if you aren't a member, or a password or something.
Its a pain that running can only be done for a certain amount of time too o_o
That's pretty stupid o_o I've often said the same thing about some other membership limitations on other sites XD
Though, it does pinch when you realise that out of the hundreds of quests available, you can do under half .
The graphics make my eyes bleed. Yeah, its old, and it needs some work.

OMG... your eyes bleed too?! I thought i was the only one! The Dr. said I was one of a kind... but now there are two of us!
I would let you two boys know if I made a third of a kind, but it's been too long since I logged in for me to remember their graphics. ![]()
The graphics could do with updating... especially the animated faces when they speak.
Volte... I don't find the graphics pleasant in the least! The first time I played I thought how terrible they looked.
Hang on...I vaguely remember not likely the graphics, but nothing extreme (I pay more attention to my "interest level," and it started dropping)
They're actually planning a rework on the graphics by next month.
I'm a long time player, a member, and I still play now and then, but for the summer I've logged off, with intent to log in and work on all the new games/quests when summer ends.
Graphics: Yes, they're old. However, as noted it's only java. Java, not directX or ActiveX or any of a thousand other more graphic intensive systems. It's designed to be playable of just about any computer produced in the last 8 or so years.
Transport: This is something you guys poked at a bit so I need to ask: Did you practice magic? After about level... I think 15 or so, you get teleport spells for moving around. Free players only get a handful of spells of course, but those are the spells for teleporting around the free world.
Security: Sadly, this is an issue, if mainly on free worlds again. Because of the fact that accounts are free to make, and easy to throw away, some people do just scam, run, then drop the wealth in an unpopulated area, log off the throw away account, which will be frozen, and pick it up with an alternate account. They've done a ton of things to try and remove real world trading, credit card scams, they have all kinds of systems in game to try and remind you about how to avoid being scammed and stay safe... But a lot of players don't take the time to do it or read it. Which of course doesn't help anything.
Things the Throw Away Free Accounts let people get away with: Swearing (Check) Scamming (Check) Account Trading (Not easy anymore, but still sadly check) Bullying (Check) Basically, the majority of problems on free worlds... are pain in the butt internet trolls who realize they don't lose anything by being complete pain in the butts. Need a new e-mail because the old one is banned? Get a new hotmail account in 20 seconds.
Anyway, I enjoy runescape myself. Yes, it's very grindy. Yes, it's very low graphics. But it's entertaining, and a good time waster. Give it a try some time next month after the graphics retool. Maybe it'll be fun, maybe you'll hate me forever. Either way. :p
Good post, Argeth.
Its good to hear they are planning a graphics rework... it's pretty overdue XD
I knew that was available... kinda and I tried to look into it but I found it too confusing... but still, for a character at level 10 which wants to go further afield, they still have to walk everywhere o_o
The security is very dodgy on Runescape... which is a shame.
XD I /have/ played Runescape and enjoyed it for short amounts of time... but it runs pretty slow and it's generally not my cup of tea. I can see why people like it but it's not for me.
I personally think Runescape is a great, original game and there aren't many web based games that can match up to the standards of Runescape.
I first started playing Runescape when I was about 12 was in RS1 mode, (classic) where the characters where in a mighty 2D! It kept me playing for a long time as I was amazed by the game and it kept me hooked to it as some of my school friends also played with me. I have also been a member during times I was playing it qutie a lot but eventually a friend told me about World of Warcraft in 2005 and I started to enjoy this more instead.
Overall I think Runescape it a great game but it seems to be aimed towards people aged around 14 years old, I think it is difficult for more mature players to get into and people who used to play it may now be confused on how much has changed in the game now.
I am interested to hear they are improving the graphics, I'll most likely make a new account on there to see what it's like ^^
You should go and check it out then, it's a very popular game you will probably enjoy ![]()
really? well whats it about? is it fun? ill go check it out....
Lis, good post *prop'd*
Thats one thing I didn't even think about...
I agree. Runescape my have some pretty bad graphics, but I've tried a great deal of MMORPG's and very few have come close when it comes to BBMMO's.
Thanks ![]()
I think it's mainly due to it's originality in comparison to other sites, the gameplay is actually pretty good once you get into it and the quests can be quite challenging. There is always something to do on the game and you can customize your character in so many ways and gain skills to enter specific guilds.
to frogger - It's an mmorpg, it's quite old but you will find you get into it quite easy and will want to improve your character as soon as you get into the game. There is now a tutorial island at the beginning to help new players get into the game.
Isn't it sort of a watered-down WoW?
My cousin showed me RuneScape once... when I said I didn't play it, he got all surprised! And when he showed me the game play, my first thought was, "he's such a troll!" My second thought was, "... they all look like trolls..."
Meh, if I don't like the graphics AND the community's bad, I'm not going to give it a second glance.
Well, it's watered-down WoW, as much as any MMO can be compared to it. But I like it better for several reasons. One: You don't have to pick a class. Any character can do any of the skills (except for the members skills on free servers, but that's a given), no needing to pick engineer or potionmaker. Anyone can mine, smith, fish, cook, etc. And members can fletch, thieve (one of my personal faves), farm, even build their own house. There's also the possibility of playing the game for free, for as long as you want (something WoW just doesn't have, 3 days is nothing for an RPG of that scale!) . Plus, mages don't have the low hp totals like they do with other games, because you don't have to specialize. Your combat level is based on attack and strength, range, *or* magic level, whichever's the highest, so no need to be "pures". As far as the graphics go, they've gone a long way from the original runescape, and there's gonna be an update really soon (like early July) that in addition to the low, medium, and high-detail settings, there will be a higher detail setting, that puts it even closer to WoW. As for the community, yes, there are going to be trolls. There are trolls on ANY online game. Period. Let's just put it this way: I've filled my friends list several times, and had to cycle out people that I don't keep in touch with anymore. My ignore list has maybe 10 names in it, tops. The good people far outweigh the trolls. Heck, I even met one of my best friends on the game. And if the game was that bad, I wouldn't have gotten my mom hooked on it. Yes, that's right, my mother plays it. I gave it a 4/5, because it's great, although not perfect. Every game has its flaws, but RS doesn't have that many...
